Problem is everyone wants the MFJ so bad... I haven't seen a used MFJ going
for that price in about two years. Last few on eBay were $50-$70 and
hamfest prices have been $50+ as well. Everyone wants them for UIDigi
around here.

If you're looking at new, off the shelf, I have no idea.
For single channel aprs work where size isn't particularly important
it's hard to go past an FM828 and an old MFJ1270B TNC.
Radio - $0 to $20 (tops)
Xtals - $60/pair for commercial grade spec. from Hy-Q.
TNC - $0 to $25
Less than $100 for a bullet proof radio (both rx and tx) and a TNC with
proven reputation.
Might be a tad heavy for balloon flights, however <grin>.
