My Garmin Map176c is still my favorite combo along side my HamHUD II (has the same station plotting feature through $GPWPL strings). There are a few on eBay:

I would suggest the 276c, but it has a firmware problem where instead of moving the waypoint marker, it just leaves the old one and creates a new waypoint, with a numerical designator on the end. It creates a neat breadcrumb feature, but annoying when you one station can easily create several hundred waypoints in your list in a single day.
Yeah, it's true, serial support on the Garmins is going away, even on the marine chartplotters, but if you are willing to go back in a time just a bit and do a little eBay searching, you can find some of these late model Garmins that have nice color screens and still support serial.
I didn't write this response just to get a plug in, but if you happen to get one of these Garmins, we have the cables that will interface it to your D700 - http://www.rpc-electronics.com/kenwood.php
