Does ir give u external access to use the data on a heads up display. Or access to the gps data?

I picked up one at Dayton.  I like it so far.  My big push to buy was finding out that the serial connection on the GR is connector and pinout compatiable with the D7's port.  For me, that meant all of the cables that I sell for the D7 works with the GR.  We even tested turning on $GPWPL string waypoint output and observed the waypoints being created on several Garmin GPS units.

The downside however, was the fact that the serial port does NOT give you external access to the internal TNC, as I was told by Yaesu engineering at the show.  This function would have been the nail in the coffin, for the D7(2), in my honest opinion.

However, since it has the $GPWPL waypoint output, I decided to play with that a write a simple logging program to grab this data off of the radio as it receives it.
