[aprssig] D700 and D710 settings

Thanks for these efforts Bob but I have to agree with some others that the
Kenwood manuals do a lousy job of clearly defining the functions of many
APRS menu items. Case in point would be the Voice Alert you're so fond of.
When setting up a memory channel for 144.39 simplex with a 100Hz CTCSS tone
I seem to get the same result as turning on the Voice Alert menu item with
the same PL so what's the difference? Does Voice Alert also add some sort of
comment to my outgoing APRS packet? I don't know and the manuals don't seem
to say. I just got back from driving 'round trip to Dayton from California
with Voice Alert ON (100PL) and I never heard anything except the occasional
data burst break squelch presumably from a nearby APRS station transmitting
with a 100Hz PL but I don't know which one because my attention was focused
where in should be, on driving. I agree with the concept of Voice Alert but
it's in the manuals where information is lacking. Another point would be
your comment in your new D710-setup file where you suggest setting a path of
wide1-1, wide 2-1 yet I'm sure you know that the D710 does not allow the
user to set the path but instead to set the number of hops then the radio
decides the path. And what about that 'GPS' object on the D710 display? It's
not shown or discussed in any of the Kenwood manuals that I see yet Kenwood
USA tells me it plays a critical role in packet transmission, i.e., the D710
will not automatically beacon until valid GPS data is detected. Valid GPS
data is indicated by a blinking 'GPS' object according to Kenwood USA yet
none of this is in their manuals. This may seem trivial now but to a new
user it can be a concern.

By the way, 'additional' is misspelled in the first paragraph and
'configuration' is misspelled in the seventh paragraph of your setup file.
Also 'monitoring' is misspelled in the paragraph beginning with PROXIMITY
RADAR. There may be others.

Subject: [aprssig] D700 and D710 settings

I put all the D700 and D710 settings on my web page:

D700: www.aprs.org/D7xx/d700-faq.txt
D710: www.aprs.org/D7xx/d710-setup.txt

This one includes saving 146.52 in BAND-A CALL channel for quick
voice alert transition to 52 (in the call channel on side a)
without having to go back to band B to QSO.
You would use this technique if you were the Voice Alert CALLER
(on side A).

If you are the callEE, then you are on band B and just dial in
your 52 channel to respond.

I hope I got it all.

Bob, Wb4APR
