Tim,

You could try APRS Messenger. It will work with a TNC or Kenwood / 
Alinco radio in terminal mode (not KISS) and doesn't use too much 
processing power. It also has APRS over PSK-63 for HF use. The APRS 
messaging is to the current APRS spec.
