I use a D-7 on one motorcycle and a D-700 on the other.
They have been all over the west and have worked well for years.
Have had not problems. Only use the bike battery.

Understand.  The rubber attenuator will have a negative effect for sure.  I'm 
going to look into the new(er) ft350 or whatever I just seen in QST the last 
two months--this way I don't have to carry a spare aprs rig with me when on 
the road.

Seems like your digi path is good.  It is mostly gong to be an RF issue.  The 
power supply while underway will help too.  I used it extensively while under 
way the last two months on my motorcycle.  It also kept the battery fully 
charged.
