I'm surprised that no one had responded until Steven VK2BOS posted
a reply. Yes, your friend could use the EJ-50U, but he would be better
off chucking it in the bin and getting a T2-135. It knows a lot more
tricks than the EJ-50U. The serial port is accessible via the DE-9.
The jack on the front can be used to connect a TNC, but it only
gets data from the GPS. You can't send waypoints to the GPS via
the front jack as you can on the DE-9.

You can put the radio in "digital" mode with FUNC-D (the squelch button).
