I'll counter, with the statement that I've seen many new, licensed hams 
flying. Seems the light sport flying has attracted a lot; many get their 
tech, specifically to have comms to the ground, and use APRS. I expect 
this to continue with, for instance the Yaesu VX8 models which are all 
in one - GPS, tnc, radio - and can be configured, put almost anywhere in 
the aircraft/ cabin, and will work once a few feet off the ground. 
Usually they have their tail number showing, but if you look at the 
status a legit call is there. At least, that's what we observe over 
Austin, Houston, San Antonio areas.
