Here is the annual 2009 update on the state of the APRS
digipeater network. It shows much better penetration of the
New-N paradigm and the optimum "S" digis...

New-N-Paradigm Digis change from Jan 2008 to Jan 2009

 S digis 1342, was 1400 New-N's that support SSn-N
 L digis 100, was 130 Limited New-N's
 F digis 18, was 32 KPC3 old ver 8.2 FLOOD only
 P digis 10, was 35 New-N Paccomms
 1 digis 198, was 180 New-N one-hop digis

Obsolete digis:

N 308, was 520 Old -N's that flood and bad timings
T 50, was 140 obsolete PacComm Trace digis
U 92, was 184 UIDIGI ROMS needing updating to "S"
 D 61, was 90 DIGI_NED needing updating to "S"
 R 36, was 95 obsolete RELAY. Should be WIDE1-1
 W 15, was 28 obsolete WIDE. Should be WIDE1-1

Considering that Europe only in October adopted the New-N
paradigm, this is showing excellent progress and reduction of
obsolete digis.

For further comparison, here is l ast years January 2008 report:

> Notice the big jump in "S" digipeaters.
> And phase out of "L"'s which do not
> support the SSn-N path..

> New-N-Paradigm Digis as of Jan 2008:
> S digis 840, was 490 New-N's that support SSn-N
> L digis 63, was 75 New-N's (should be S's)
> F digis 20, was 20 KPC3 old ver 8.2 FLOOD only
> P digis 17, was 20 New-N Paccomms
> 1 digis 61, was 30 New-N one-hop digis

P.S. Its not just simply changing the Overlay byte! It is
adopting ALL of the New-N settings throughout the digi. "S" is
not set until ALL of the parameters are correctly set.
