Certainly. There is no doubt that there are pioneers in every field.

On the other hand, I had text messaging in a commercially deployed
GSM900 network starting 1993 with my Mobira Cityman 2000:

Haven't yet gotten around to like the user interface after all these
years. I still prefer a decent phone call or a text chat with a full
QWERTY keyboard to GSM short messaging. Reviving a concept specified
in the 80's isn't exactly my idea of being in the forefront of radio
communications.
