[aprssig] APRS/Winlink puzzles

Hi folks,

Three puzzles... I'm still trying to figure this stuff out; can you help?

We took a trip up to Washington State last week, and while sitting at a rest stop for a moment, I thought I'd try to "ping" the WinLink system. Sending the string "i" to wlnk-1 should result in the system replying with a version string and web address. My TH-D7 apparently sent it 4 times, over the span of a few minutes.

I got nothing back. {shrug} so much for that experiment...

Then when I got home, the following was waiting for me on my Xastir screen:

08/13 08:28 WLNK-1 >(Sent to:KO6TH-7) APRSLink v2.8.8.0 www.winlink.org/aprslink fo
08/13 08:29 WLNK-1 >(Sent to:KO6TH-7) APRSLink v2.8.8.0 www.winlink.org/aprslink fo
08/13 08:31 WLNK-1 >(Sent to:KO6TH-7) APRSLink v2.8.8.0 www.winlink.org/aprslink fo
08/13 08:35 WLNK-1 >(Sent to:KO6TH-7) APRSLink v2.8.8.0 www.winlink.org/aprslink fo

Puzzle #1: Why did the messages go out through my system at home in California, when I was somewhere in Oregon at the time?

Now I look for my messages on aprs-is (the "messages" screen on aprs.fi), and I see this:

 2009-08-13 15:28:50 UTC: KO6TH-7>WLNK-1: i

 2009-08-13 15:28:51 UTC: WLNK-1>KO6TH-7: APRSLink v2.8.8.0 www.winlink.org/aprslink fo

 2009-08-13 18:52:49 UTC: KO6TH-7>WLNK-1: i

 2009-08-13 18:52:50 UTC: WLNK-1>KO6TH-7: APRSLink v2.8.8.0 www.winlink.org/aprslink fo

 2009-08-13 18:53:00 UTC: KO6TH-7>WLNK-1: i

 2009-08-13 23:39:00 UTC: KO6TH-7>WLNK-1: i

 2009-08-13 23:39:01 UTC: WLNK-1>KO6TH-7: APRSLink v2.8.8.0 www.winlink.org/aprslink fo

Puzzle #2: Why are the times off? The first pair is ok, but the rest are hours late. Why?

And, puzzle #3: What happened to the reply to the third information request? It's clearly on my Xastir's screen, so the "system" saw it, but it does not appear on aprs-is.

Thanks,

Greg KO6TH
