I bought one of Scott's GTRANS cables without the heat shrink in place, and added my 'standard' 5v connection to a DB-9. Works a treat, and now I can use a single mini-USB (to the side connector) to run the unit. Unfortunately, the D710 won't supply enough current to drive this... but I know how to get around that.
