Just received an emailed sales flyer from CompuPlus.com . They are
offering the Garmin GPS-18 (USB version) for only USD $43 ! This
includes a Garmin-provided mapping program for North America, "nRoute"
that is similar to the maps produced on their car navigator GPS devices.

The USB version of the GPS-18 "hockey puck" outputs Garmin proprietary
binary format only. However there is a driver downloadable from Garmin
that translates this to generic NMEA on a virtual COM port, so that it
could be used with Windows mapping or APRS programs such as UIview,
APRSpoint or APRSplus.

As an alternative, the Franson GPSgate serial port splitter utility can
capture the USB data stream from this device, convert the data to NMEA
and output it to MULTIPLE virtual com ports for use with several
GPS-oriented programs at the same time.

[Note that the USB version of the GPS-18 WILL NOT work with
stand-alone non-computer devices like Kenwood radios, TinyTracks,
OpenTrackers, KPC3s, etc. YOu MUST have a Windows PC to make use of
this device.]

URL for this special is:

No financial interest in this offering -- just thought it might be of
interest to other APRS users.
