True, but the context is a high speed APRS network, and 802.11 gear
seems like a good candidate for experimentation given the amount of
gear, open source work done (e.g. dd-wrt), and the fact we've got
APRS-IS protocols and software in place.  In fact, doesn't someone
already have igate software running on a dd-wrt equipped router,
complete with the hacked-out serial port attached to a TNC?

There's no need for general internet connectivity, other than APRS-IS
links (carefully controlled to keep it non-commercial).
