As I indicated and you understood correctly, the "message" is not displayed on the radio front panel from that string.  It arrives to the front panel (not in the course/bearing display, by the way) via a different method which is not exposed by the radio.  Consider the Icom GPS information "read-only" and that should help.

But, if the voice portion becomes garbled, so is your mute function.  Remember, the audio information has forward error correction, the control information does not and is far more susceptible to corruption.
