Before writing an app for Blackberry phones you might want to take a look at
http://dcc.openaprs.net/ and learn about OpenAPRS's Direct Client Connection
interface.  DCC makes it very easy for embedded applications to parse live
feeds, send position reports and check/send APRS messages.  There are plenty
of examples of use and an example function to parse the DCC stream.
