[aprssig] APRS Station

I am working at setting up a mobile APRS station in my 2004 Ford Freestar. I have a Kenwood TM-D700 installed and operating. I have recently purchased a Garmin GPS18PC. I am trying to find the DB9 cable to splice the GPS cable that came with the radio to hook up the GPS. What I was wondering is what software would be the best for a person new to APRS to run on a laptop running Windows Vista?
