[aprssig] help with UI-view

I've had one here that was outputting NMEA sentences, and a friend of mine
regularly uses one with UI-View. No additional software loaded in either
case.

You are out of luck. The GPS18 USB only outputs Garmin format. However,
Garmin eventually came out with a utility program to convert from Garmin to
NMEA format, so your luck is improving. You should be able to find it at
www.garmin.com
