I've asked that myself in the past. Stations outside your range filter could
show up for a few reasons. Someone near you could just plain be gating them
out to RF. Someone in your area could have queried the other station. I was
going to say that they could have sent a message to someone "local" to your
area, but you are using the "type" filter with "m" in there meaning that the
server you are connected to will send all messages to you. That could be
part of it. I am also using the "type" filter to see satellites. However,
some of them are always in the same fixed position. It's kinda cute when
someone uses a wrong symbol like that, but using the satellite symbol
doesn't make them a satellite. There's one station near me that uses the
"helicopter" symbol. However, he solidly has four wheels in contact with the
road. If you look at any of the stations outside your range filter, you
should be able to determine why they showed up by examining their raw data.
In my case, the "satellites" in Europe an Japan are on my map because of my
type filter. You could look at the raw data for the stations outside your
range filter and see if they had sent messages.
