I had never thought of that possibility before, but it could well be true!

Spock was a very wise... umm, being. I'm sure he would have always chose a
logical path and not used one that knowingly harmed others. Of course,
Scotty would have wanted to tinker with it and improve it even if it wasn't
broken. Captain Kirk would have listened to Spock while asking Scotty to get
a few more light years out of the path, but would have ultimately listened
to Spock's reasoned argument for a non-abusive path.
