Using the D700 without the control head. (Was RE: [aprssig] "Best" Mobile APRS Radio & TNC)

 Dave,
  Are you sure it controls a head-less radio?    That
page doesn't say.
  Disconnecting the D700 head shuts down he radio.  It
appears that there is an "are-you-connected" watchdog.
   A fella has done this for the 706 to talk with the
control-head interface on the radio.  That requires
custom hardware as well as specially timed keep-alive
responses from the phantom-head. 
  Or does it just control the radio via the serial
port, but the head is still connected?
