Bob, I understand your point and I agree with you. I may not be following
this thread correctly, but I think the person using the TNC mobile was using
it as a tracker and did not have it connected to a computer. The
TinyTrackers and OpenTrackers are much better suited for this task than a
TNC that is spitting out entire NMEA sentences.
The trackers can format their data in APRS format so that additional
information provided by the user is available in the comment section.
Information like destination, email address, or frequency being monitored.
The beacon is much shorter than a typical TNC will generate in tracking mode
and can be further compressed with Base 91 or MIC-E.
That said, the newest and upcoming generation of trackers will have receive
capability. Just how that will be utilized is to be seen.
