[aprssig] transceiver for APRS?

This reminds me of one thing i'd like the D700 to do -

Change my status text to read "monitoring [insert freq in voice band here]
[PL XXX.X/DPL XXX][+/-/SMX]".  I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to make a
little Microcontroller to do this for me, maybe poll the radio every 2 or
3 minutes for the data, and enter the text....

making it so this "new" radio could interface with other rigs (granted, it
would be a limited set of radios, but i'm sure this could be expanded by
the user, given the "computer control-ability" that we're talking about)
to do something likt this would be neat....
