<<THis is my pet -pieve, that ALL maps must display a range scale>>

Bob, you need to start buying your maps from highly paid professional
cartographes, who ALWAYS put scales on their maps, instead of from the local
7-11 and the computer mapping companies.<G>

The good news is that maps are SO easily available these days, the bad news is
that makes it much harder to find the good ones. When in doubt, the REAL GOOD
STUFF from USGS is always available online from places like Maptech's online
mapserver (www.maptech.com) or Topozone.com. Beware of Maptech--when they tile
maps, sometimes they tile across datums and they don't tell you which is in use.

AFAIK, there are no online map companies (Navteq, DeLorme, GoogleEarth's
sources, etc.) who are really doing a good job of pointing out how badly off
they often are. How would you like to use a Navteq map and find out it
mislocated you, on the wrong side of an icy ridge? Caveat emptor.
