Ok, I think that educates me.  Thanks!

And I surely don't want to talk someone out of using 
it or anything like that.  In my location all of those
parameters are just off hand guesses.  And since this
is a digital system, the only way to get signal strength
is via operator intervention so that's kind of a bust
too.  I'd have to switch to the same antenna I'm using
for APRS (with it's somewhat fuzzy parameters) and manually
get an estimate of signal strength.  And if I'm going
to do that, it's more convient for me to just use an
audio "yup" or "nope" than to try to send a message
or modify my APRS settings.

Like I say, I don't want to be too much of a rain on the 
parade.  Its a beautiful Friday morning, and if this
works for you then it is a wonderful thing.
