[aprssig] BMW X5 - integrated GPS

Get the Factory Service Manual for your vehicle. If it is not an OnStar
unit it may have info in there. Otherwise, Google and hope.

I am installing an Eclipse AVN-7000 for a product review. It is an
all-in-one navigation and entertainment system. It is going into a 1999
Jeep TJ. One of the things it wants is a Vehicle Speed Pulse Signal. Try
to get your local dealership or DC to answer a question about that via
e-mail or in person. They have no clue.

But get the Factory Service Manual and not only can you find the wire that
carries that signal, but also what connectors and splices it has. Turns out
it is kind of a pain to get to, but that's part of life as a mobile Ham,
right?

BTW, I am checking with the Eclipse factory to see if it is possible to tap
an NMEA output in the unit. If there is, then this might be a really neat
solution for a true-all-in-one for people like us.

Subject: [aprssig] BMW X5 - integrated GPS

I have just bought a used BMW X5. It has an integrated GPS receiver
(somewhere!?). I will try to mount my new TM-D700 in it. I'm wondering if;

A) Anyone have mounted a TM-D700 in a BMW X5 and want to share experiences,
good and/or bad, difficulties, smart ideas?

And

B) if anyone have managed to use the integrated GPS receiver, is there a
terminal somewhere in the car where NMEA is available?

I have a feeling that if I start asking questions like this down in my BMW
shop, they will return blank stares... At best, give me a 'Don't do it, you
will wreck all systems in the car!'-answer.
