At this point, perhaps a very BAD analogy actually. Since the FCC, bless their
pointy little heads, have decided that the new HDTV standard to be implement
2009-ish will be totally incompatible with existing analog televisions, which
would have all had to be THROWN OUT in 2009.
Apparently Congress figured out how many villagers are capable of carrying
torches and pitchforks, and they are now discussing giving every household in
the US one "federal coupon" good for a $40 rebate on the purchase of an "analog
tv adapter box" so that each household will be able to convert the new signals,
so they can watch at least one old TV.

Unless Kenwood were to make a corporate committment to keep supplying APRS
radios, and to upgrade their new radios to more completely support the existing
APRS standards, it might be foolish for hams to build an APRS world based on
radios that might simply go out of production tomorrow and are already obsolete
yesterday.
