Dave's right - unless your house is separarted from the incoming line by a transfer switch or relay, you could be feeding power into the lines that someone is trying to put back on a pole. This is one reason to NEVER assume a downed power line is dead.

Also - be careful where your exhaust is going - many of the deaths following storms are due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The garage may not be the best place to put your generator.
