Don't forget that Rat Shack HTX-10's can be had for relatively cheap.  
Granted, they would not be frequency agile like a xtal based radio but 
still would be something cheap to experiment with.  

I've used a Radio Shack mag mount CB antenna with my HTX-10 and have had 
good signal reports (as we all have with some sort of antenna of that 
ilk).  

I've wanted to put a 10m igate on the air.  Bob, according to:

28.187 is the frequency you list for 10m.  Is this still correct?

I've had quite a bit of fun on voice with the setup I've got, APRS could
