Manufacturing, certification, marketing... you've got to build thousands of
them to get it down to the sort of price people expect to pay.

Now, I think it might be interesting to come up with a mod for the D700
that'd take over the display, replace the TNC, and so forth...

Can be hard to make a GPS / interface / VHF radio
