The javax.comm package makes this easy enough on windows. The RXTX package can be used on linux to use javax.comm work
there too. I've had no problem using it for serial port access. There are some interesting issues with how odd serial
port devices in linux are supported. If you have problems, feel free to drop me an email. I've waded through
installation of javax.comm in several different environments.
