[aprssig] Did ICOM DSTAR ever take off ? can it be used for APRS ?

Ahh, I see your point. While received packets on a TNC2 in converse
mode carry the full path information, sent packets do not. And Internet
connectivity is normally required for a client to "properly" format sent
packets (full TNC2 format).

I have the ability to make the javAPRSSrvr D-Star interface a
stand-alone application to allow connection from a single client and
just do basic pass-through for the client. Then, the client would think
it has an Internet connection and format the packets properly. All vias
would be eliminated from the line to ensure short packets and proper
IGate operation.

The one issue I have with the interface is with Windows. The interface
I have written is in Java and uses a file interface to the serial port.
This works fine with 'ix operating systems. However, the Java/Windows
interface does not allow full duplex operation (transmitted data is held
until some data is received). I will look at what it would take to make
a "virtual" com port that would work with Java on Windows.
