For 9600b the best transceivers are
1.Kenwood D700 (with External TNC)
2.KENWOOD V7 (The Blue One)
3. http://www.df2fq.de/english_version/T7F_eng.html  This is also a good
solution (UHF)

The Kenwood TRX needs a lot of signal from the TNC for Proper transmition.
All the above behave excellent have been tested on air.

Another good one is the YAESU FT817 the QRP but costs much more.
