[aprssig] D700 and NMEA waypoints

I ran into that problem when I tried to find a PDA-based mapping solution
for search and rescue. They might download waypoints, but they won't accept
and plot unsolicited waypoints. I had a thought the other day, though - if
my new tracker had enough RAM to track a suitable number of stations, it
could pretend to be a Garmin GPS receiver, and respond to waypoint transfer
requests. It'd still be a manual process, but it'd let you get APRS data
into any program that supports Garmin waypoint downloads.

I think it'll have to wait for the next evolution of my tracker hardware,
though - the current 2-way tracker prototype has 2k of RAM.

Thanks Brad,

As to be expected.

So you can get

1) $GPRMC from the serial port in TNC PKT mode with LTMON set (for your
position)
2) $GPWPL from the GPS port in TNC APRS mode with "waypoint" set from the
radio menu. (for others positions)

I hit up the software writters of some street mapping stuff and they said
you can only "download" waypoints

There is some software that talks to oziexplorer floting around that uses
the API. Will fiddle with that.

I am doing this beacuse I want street level stuff and the maps only work
with a certain program (oziexplorer)

Thanks for your help . I appreciate it

Sorry Andy, I got a bit tied up and didn't play with this until today.

I have my D700 set to the APRS freq, in TNC PKT mode and WinPack running on
the PC so I can see everything coming in. The D700's APRS settings are set
for NMEA in & out (so in APRS mode it sends the waypoints), and my eMap is
plugged into the GPS port and has a sat lock. I first tested in TNC APRS
mode and made sure it all worked, then switched to TNC PKT mode.

By default, GPS sentences aren't forwarded out the data port, but if you
issue the command "LTMON <n>" to the D700 then it will forward a position
statement (in a rather proprietary format) every <n> seconds.
Unfortunately, received beacons are *not* sent back to the GPS in PKT mode.
:-(

Brad.

Gudday

Wanting to use the D700's ability to send waypoints as stations are decoded
to a street level capable software package.

Does the D700 only spit out NMEA waypoint strings in "TNC APRS" mode ?

Does the D700 have to have a valid NMEA input string before it will talk
"back" at a GPS ?

Is there a way to get to just act as a decoder sending waypoints as they
come in ?

Cheers Andy
