~~ Snip~~
Please, don't 'hard-wire' this in the firmware, without the ability
for the local sysop to alter it by a config file or similar
I understand you guys over there have/had major problems with excess
traffic, but over here in New Zealand, one can run the entire country
in one 1200bd channel without problems. The digis are either UI-View
or UI-Digi, or something else that does dupe suppresion, and people
can (and do) run RELAY,WIDE7-7 (Oh, the horror! <g>) without causing
grief. WIDE7-7 is a bit of an overkill, I agree, as I can only think
of a chain of 5 digis that can hear their neighbour, but the traffic
is so light it doesn't cause any harm. At night, when no-one is
driving around, there's sometimes 5 minute gaps of dead airtime, and
I'm sometimes left wondering if my aerial has fallen off or something...
