I love to hear such a positive first-time linux user story, so it is with
great regret that I have to burst your bubble:  WHile the Mepis
distribution will run from CD only, the read-only CD device does not
provide any space to install additional applications.  So I have to tell
you that an investment in a hard drive will be necessary before you
proceed with further Linux application exploration.

  Xastir does indeed have an igate function.  I'm not familiar with
fugawi, so I can't comment on your second question.
