I think that you are on the right track. You could start by putting up a low elevation RELAY digipeater in the area where you don't seem to get having any success.

Are you running Windows? UI-View32 would be a good candidate. It can run as just an intelligent digi or as both a digi and an IGate. It depends on what you want to accomplish. If just getting to the existing WIDE digi is enough, then perhaps just adding your RELAY digi will do the job. However, even if there is another IGate within earshot of the existing WIDE digi, it won't hurt of they both gate traffic to the Internet. Just be careful with gating from the Internet to the RF and don't gate everything that comes from the Internet. Again, UI-View32 is very good with this. The author Roger G4IDE SK is no longer around (to defend himself) but his program will live on for a long time to come.

I looked at www.findu.com/cgi-bin/near.cgi?call=KI4HDU-0, and there are stations around you, but not a huge number, so you will probably be doing everyone a favour if you put in a digi or an IGate or both.

Just looked further and see your beacons are going in via TCPIP.... www.findu.com/cgi-bin/raw.cgi?call=KI4HDU-0.  I looked up  APX142 and it looks like you are using XASTIR. I haven't tried it yet, but I hear it is very capable, so ignore the comments about UI-View32 above and apply them to XASTIR instead!
