Bob, this seems like another instance of where we disagree. In most cases I
would agree with you, but I run APRSDos, and I re-enable HID manualy every
time I re-start the program. WHY?

Well, you've said many times that APRS was designed for "real time tactical"
operation. It's not a far jump from "tactical" to "emergency" use. I have my
station set up to be useful during a total loss of commercial power. The
radio and TNC will be powered by a 12v size 27 "deep cycle" battery. The
computer that runs APRS will not be powered.

I have set my TNC's mailbox to be available, and set the TNC's KANode as
well. Both of these could be quite valuable during an blackout when
"normal" communication channels are out. BUT if I have HID set to off, how
will folks know that this resource is available? As a "backup" I have set
the Beacon to once every 60 min and to use the standard APRS "quit" beacon
(somewhat confusing during 'normal' times, but very valuable during
emergency times)
