You are probably right that there are a lot more 2M radio gear kicking around. The advantage in being on another band is the two won't desense each other if they are co-located. Desense to the connected channel will just slow things down with missed packets being retried, but desense of the receiver handling APRS could cause a lot of beacons to not be heard.
