I should let an Xastir user answer this, but try connecting to one of the tier 2 port 14580 servers (you can send a "filter" command to the port 14580 servers) such as arizona.aprs2.net:14580... or use hub1.aprs2.net:14580 or hub2.aprs2.net:14580 and let "the system" pick a server for you. I haven't tried Xastir yet, but in UI-View32, I would enter "filter r/38/-76/200" in the "extra log-on text" to tell the server to just send me data for stations within a 200 km radius of that position.
