Hi David,

Yes, we can do that. Ship to your CBA/qrz.com?

Could I please be added to the initial round of testing? Thank you.

l sedsHi Nathaniel,

How about concerns over proximity to large metal structures? A useful thing to define here would be minimum distance from any metal sheds, roofs, fences, etc.

Those are good questions, Phil.

As you suggest, I think we should be testing for:

  *   Varying RF/Magnetometer noise environments (e.g. urban/suburban/rural)
  * Varying climates (hot, cold, dry, wet)
  * Ability to work in close proximity to a 100W to 1500W class amateur radio station.

The current Round 2 test site list was chosen primarily based on locations of current project participants who would be able to provide reasonable engineering support. I believe it does already cover a number of the different conditions above. We can certainly revise the list if needed. We also kept a few units in reserve.

I would be very glad to have you field some of these and we can increase your count to 3.

Hi all,

I’ve spoken to a number of people individually, but now I want to send a group e-mail so we are all on the same page regarding the magnetometer prototype testing plan.

I would like to do the distribution of prototypes in two rounds. This is because we do not yet have an established protocol for installation or basic data collection. Round 1 will be a small distribution with magnetometer boards being sent to:

PROTOTYPE ROUND 1
QTY
Frissell
Nathaniel
W2NAF
Scranton
1
PSWS PI Institution
Kim
Hyomin
KD2MCR
NJIT
2
Magnetometer PI Institution
Witten
Dave
KD0EAG
TAPR
1
Chief Designer
Madey
Jules
K2KGJ
HamSCI/TAPR
2
Design Evaluation / Major Contributor
Larsen
Dave
KV0S
TAPR
1
Beta Tester (MAIL TO KD0EAG)

During Round 1:

  1. Dave KD0EAG will be testing his code to make sure it works with the new magnetometer layout.
  2. Dave KD0EAG will be developing a quick-and-dirty file-based data collection system (see below).
  3. Jules K2KGJ will be doing side-by-side testing of two magnetometers in Hillsdale, NY.
  4. Hyomin KD2MCR will lead the development of the installation instruction manual with input from Dave KD0EAG and Jules K2KGJ.
  5. Dave KV0S and Nathaniel W2NAF will help as needed.

The data collection system Dave KD0EAG is going to be quick-and-dirty file-based data collection system. The goal is to simply rsync or scp *.csv.bz2 files up to a central server hosted by linode.com<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flinode.com%2F&data=04%7C01%7CDavid.G.McGaw%40dartmouth.edu%7Ccd87b1e7bb1f4060ff7e08d8865c5113%7C995b093648d640e5a31ebf689ec9446f%7C0%7C0%7C637407078355250093%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=EUjXXDvsN3iAYzSi%2FHKdTwk6tJmrjxbJBnfitcKXQ3o%3D&reserved=0> on some hourly or daily basis. The goal here is simplicity and reliability to allow us to get access to data ASAP. No databases or visualization will be done at this point. This will not be the final solution, but it should be something we can get working within one to two weeks. We can use NJIT’s antarctic GMAG data server as an example: https://antarcticgeospace.njit.edu/Data/Fluxgate/<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fantarcticgeospace.njit.edu%2FData%2FFluxgate%2F&data=04%7C01%7CDavid.G.McGaw%40dartmouth.edu%7Ccd87b1e7bb1f4060ff7e08d8865c5113%7C995b093648d640e5a31ebf689ec9446f%7C0%7C0%7C637407078355260087%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=cgz2lQC0x6Ili6HCVO0DqiIpQnFAFec%2FKg3V2CvKnyA%3D&reserved=0>

Once we have that running, and an initial draft of the installation manual is complete, we will distribute the rest of the magnetometers to the people on the Round 2 list.

If you are on the Round 2 list and would like a magnetometer set sooner rather than later, let me know, and I am sure we can accommodate you.

Thanks for your hard work, everyone!
