[nos-bbs] JNOS to Direwolf (using AGWPE)

I am in the process of converting my (very) old hardware TNCs over to Direwolf. I have Direwolf running on a rPI3b with a Masters Communications DRA45.
JNOS connects to Direwolf via AGWPE on the local LAN. The problem I am having is that I can connect to JNOS with no issues, but when I try and list messages nothing appears. I assume this is due to packet length. Which corresponds to the error I see in the JNOS logs. (agwpe_send - packet (272) larger then mtu).
However I am having a problem reducing the packet length to below 256. I have it set in the direwolf.conf and I also have tried setting the mtu for this port in autoexec.nos to 256.
I also tried reducing the MTU to 128, but I'm getting the same error. Obviously, I am missing something! 
Does anyone happen to have a working config they can share ?
