Bill, older versions of grub used the Escape key. What you want to do
is hold the Shift key while it is booting. From there, you can choose
from a menu of any of the older kernels that were installed.
I just ran into that troubleshooting an entirely different problem.
Actually, I had to get to a root shell prompt, which is one of the
choices on the grub menu.
I suggest following the earlier advice and try an earlier kernel
version rather than a shell prompt. If it returns to a running JNOS
console, use that kernel and troubleshoot further to see if perhaps
there was an ncurses update that is preventing the JNOS screen from
appearing.
