It can..

Couple of examples for the imaginary vd3abc server


*@vd3abc.ampr.org  $1
*@vd3abc           $1
*@vd3abc.*         $1
*@vd3abc-5*        $1
*@vd3abc-6*        $1


So this catches mail addressed to "xx9xx at vd3abc" for example and tries 
to store it in mailbox "xx9xx"

If xx9xx is allowed to receive mail it will be stored, otherwise it is 
returned to sender by the mail daemon.

Above examples doesn't effect things mailed  with "s xx9xx" or "sp 
xx9xx", so without the '@'

You can even redirect those to another mailbox.
