[nos-bbs] remember the 'incoming smtp connect, but nothing else' problem ?

Hi all,

Do any of you remember that dreaded problem where an outside (non-44)
smtp connection is made to NOS, but nothing else happens, no banners,
no other traffic, it just hangs there ?

reverse lookup for the x.y.ampr.org being delivered to is fine.

How did we deal with it, or what ideas came up back then ?
