Very good ideas Bill,
I am not against 1200, I already have 2 X 1200 and 2 X 9600 user ports
in my Mbox here in Athens and I think 1200 is OK for a portable packet
system. I use my Palm Vx and TH-D7 with a simple terminal program to
access my JNOS Mbox or Linux Telpack Node here in Athens on 144.625 or
144.650 and it works great with a simple terminal program. This way
anyone with a very simple terminal can access the system.
I am already playing with a WRT54GS and after my holidays I am going to
install OpenWRT and install a PCB with a double serial port which I have
already ordered and awaiting to receive.
Now imagine a mobile station with a WRT54GS and 2 serial ports in it,
OpenWRT, a PR430 for UHF 9600 or 1200 PACKET radio in a small box
connected to the 1st serial port, and maybe a PTC-II/HF Radio for HF
Pactor or another TNC/VHF Radio for 1200bps PACKET!!! All this in the
boot of the car with the HF Radio and a PDA with Wifi or a Laptop with
WiFi or Ethernet cable near the driver or the co-driver. Same setup can
be used at home.
We could also use GIGA-TECH's radios for 78600 bps if we can construct
them from KIT. Unfortunatelly we are not allowed to use 900MHZ in
Europe. You are lucky in USA.
Finally I must tell you, although you probably know, that OpenWRT that
can be installed in WRT54GS can run DIGINED, TNN-TOOLS, TNN, WAMPES,
XNET and shortly JAVAPRS as I have read. Now wouldn't it be a good idea
to have JNOS running in it? (hint hint hint)

I think JNOS is already shining thanks to Maiko and to all that have
encouraged him.
