<p>All the TNC2s and derivatives, all the way to the end of the
line in the late '90s, defaulted to the 7E1 settings on power
up. They always had to be commanded to 8N1 , usually via TNC
init strings, for convenient use on APRS. <br>
</p>
<p>Dumb ASCII terminals in the late '70s to early '80s (before PCs
appeared and became ubiquitous as terminal devices) defaulted to
the 7E1 serial setting. Since in the beginning TNC2s were used
with these types of terminals, 7E1 was defaulted in the firmware
The archaic 7E1 convention has been literally "frozen in stone"
(i.e. in eprom silicon) now for over 40 years now, long
outliving it's usefulness. <br>

<p>I got fed up enough with this anachronism that I hacked the
TAPR 1.1.9 firmware image to make it power up in today's
default 8N1, and have installed this in numerous 127x TNCs. <br>
</p>
<p>The baud rate, on the other hand, was set by hardware dip
switches, so it's trivial to make the (preferred today) rate of
9600 stick.<br>
