I realize we're not quite on the APRS topic, but a few quick
comments...<br>
<br>
Battery longevity in an EV is certainly a concern, given how
expensive they are. But the battery in any of the cars with active
thermal management will probably last about as long as the rest of
the car. My Tesla Roadster is over 7 years old now, 41k miles, and
I've only lost 13% of the battery, which is slightly worse than
average. Still over 200 miles of range, however, if I need it.<br>
<br>
Stop and go traffic is actually the best kind for an EV. A gas car
is most inefficient when accelerating, wasteful when idling, and
braking just creates heat and dust. It's the highway speeds that
take their toll on range due to air resistance, which increases
dramatically with speed. Also, the scale of the power usage by the
traction motor dwarfs nearly all of the electrical accessories.
Lights, radio, and even heated seats are essentially free in terms
of range. Cabin heat and A/C do impact range, especially at the
weather extremes. They generally draw a few kw, though even that is
intermittent. For comparison, flat, level travel at 65 mi/hr takes
15-20kw, or about 10x. Worst case is freeway speeds in the dead of
winter; count on a 20+% loss of range, or worse if you're heading
into a head wind on slushy roads. (Note that speed, slush, and
headwinds affect your gas car's mileage too. It's physics.)<br>
<br>
So, sit back in your clean EV and enjoy your bumper-to-bumper
commute while you check into the local Net (hands-free, please).
Or, as I did, toss a Raspberry Pi running APRS YAAC under the dash,
and tie its video into the in-dash display (where the backup camera
goes). A few override switches, and you can easily see who's
around. I currently run mine tethered to my cell phone for Internet
access, but a radio + TNC software can be added too. The
combination of the EV's efficiency and Ham Radio can really lower
your blood pressure during these otherwise stressful times of the
day.<br>

<div>Ideally I'd have two vehicles -- a bigger one for hauling
and recreation, and an EV for in-town commutes. Limited to
one vehicle for myself, I'm not prepared to give up
road-tripping, towing and some off-road capability. So my
recent purchase was still fossil. My other concern with
EV's is battery longevity -- though a relative of mine
(brammo.com) is working on that. :-)</div>

<div>For the daily commute, alot of us deal with an antiquated
transportation infrastructure. In gridlock traffic, hours of
operation can be more important than raw range in miles. Even
a highly intelligent system couldn't shut down entirely when
you're in stop-and-go traffic. You'd still want radio,
lights, and wattage-hungry heat or A/C while you're
contemplating the view of the column of traffic ahead. But if
I wasn't much into recreation, I'd consider a smaller electric
sedan now.<br>

<div>Most people have not been aware that now with 8 years
of modern EV's being on the market, that now EV's are
better, faster, cleaner and cheaper to buy, cheaper to
operate, and cheaper to maintain than the average gas
car. ($29k with incentives vs $33k for gas)</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>You can get new full size EV's for under $20k and there
are 6 years of used ones starting at $5k and up to about
$15k.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>And only 12 solar panels can now full charge the
average daily American mileage everyday FOREVER! Imagine
the independence.</div>

<div>Never run out of gas or go to a gas station again.</div>
<div><br>

<div>Also, its nice to have 24 kWH of battery with you
everywhere you go. Plug the house into the EV and run for
a week.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Before investing in a fossil fuel car it is good to ask
where EV's are now and where they will be in 6 years when
you go to try to sell that fossil.</div>
