A group of hams used aprsis32 in their vehicles to track the balloon and find its landing location so the girls could come in and hike to the landing spot. Girls and parents headed towards a rendezvous point and could view the balloon tracking on their
smart phones using aprs.fi in the areas that had cell coverage.

Our last reading was at 8200 a little over 1000k feet from the landing elevation. The chasers could not hear the APRS packet once it was on the ground. They used the last reading they had to get to the general vicinity and then could pick up the beacon,
get a reading and know about where it was. It landed in a hilly area of Wyoming where there are lots of gas and oil mines, and lucky to be about 1/4 mile off of a 4-Wheel drive road.

This will be my first year using this program for balloon chasing. I used UI-View previously many years ago for this. This sunday our club will be assisting a class from Florida
State University to track and locate the balloon. Other than the Footprint setting, is there anything else that I need to configure?

Interesting there is a company that makes a device called Eagle Flight Computer that contains an aprs transmitter, GPS, pressure sensor etc that is marketed for schools. The packet paths are adjusted automatically depending
on the altitude so on the way down (I believe below 3000'), it adds WIDE 1-1 to the mix for additional digi coverage. The only configuration that you have to do for APRS is the callsign.

The call will be K4TLH-11 in case anyone would like to flight follow.
