So, basically one needs to run two separate applications. One for
bi-directional messaging, one for locally viewing all the good stuff
that Firenet provides.<br>

Pete, would it be approximately correct to say that Firenet provides
Receive-only iGate functionality? I.e., all one loses is the
ability to gate traffic out to RF? Anything else missing? <br>

Use firenet for NWS and your favorite APRS-IS server for
everything else. Any decent igate app should be able to
handle multiple servers/connections.<br>
